The Lifeline’s goals

1. To document and connect change-agents, eco-solutions and sustainable projects to inspire people around the world towards positive change.

2. To encourage volunteerism by exchanging our skills for food and lodging rather than relying on conventional cash-based budgets.

3. To limit our travel budget to $3000/month per film-making team, so we don't overspend or consume resources unnecessarily.

4. To limit our carbon footprint by trekking, cycling, taking public transportation, sailing, and using sustainable bio-fuel vehicles.

5. To limit the use of disposables, over-packaged products and to use gear that is sustainable, bio-degradable and hard-wearing.

6. To inspire local film-makers along way to continue reporting and uploading reports on sustainability once the Lifeline team has moved on.

7. To create online reports and a DVD called “The Ultimate Guide to Sustainability” as a resource for schools, communities and individuals as an exact guide to making sustainable changes in all our lives.

8. To give a positive purpose to long-distance travel by encouraging a new wave of film-makers documenting ecological solutions around the planet.

9. To use our knowledge to build a series of Lifeline eco-communities in the future for people to live and learn how to sustain all life on Earth.

So what exactly is the Lifeline?

Our ambition is to create a bank of knowledge, a digital ark for our future, with our Lifeline reports acting as an inspiration and a guide as to how we can implement sustainability into our lives.

How is the Lifeline going to do that?

Over the course of one year, traveling over 18,000 miles across the globe, our three teams will visit a variety of sustainable projects along the way. At each place they will discover and understand how each project works and its importance, to create a practical guide on sustainable solutions for Humanity to share.

Is this just a bunch of people going off to have a good time?

This is no holiday! When the three teams step out of their nice comfy lives, their mission is to live as sustainably as possible. With no flying, minimal budgets and sharing the workload, they will have to document as many aspects of sustainability as they can in one year. That means living the life and getting their hands dirty as they look to answer the question “What is the Lifeline for our future?”

Are the films being made by a load of worthy film-makers?

Our film-makers are from the competitive world of commercial TV, who know how to tell a story and now want to find out if there is a solution to saving our world. Included in each team is one ‘ordinary’ person whose ups and downs along the journey we will follow with a fine tooth comb.

So we’ll keep our drama and comedy heads on to ensure the films are funny, informative and full of life. That’s a promise – we lose if you snooze!

So how will I find out about what the Lifeline discovers?

Each team-member will be making their own video blog every nine days that will be uploaded onto the web site (internet connections permitting). So that’ll make a new film for you to see every day! There will also be information about each of the projects they visit on the web site and a regular newsletter with updates on how the teams are doing.

What happens once the Lifeline journeys end?

At the end of the journeys we’ll create a set of DVDs as an ultimate guide to sustainability. We intend to encourage low carbon-footprint, ethical travel with a new wave of film-makers and travellers visiting and giving practical support to sustainable projects. And finally we want to develop a series of Lifeline eco-communities using the knowledge, skills and contacts picked up on our journeys, to accelerate the global movement towards sustaining all life on Earth.
